Day 1 Discovery
What to Expect on your First Visit
Your First Visit could also be called Discovery Day.
Your first visit is designed for your doctors to learn more about you, your condition and your expectations to determine whether chiropractic care will help you reach your goals. You will have a consultation with one of our chiropractors to discuss your health-related problems, concerns, as well as potential treatment options.
We have created a special room for all of our unique exams. There are a series of scans we will use during our assessment that are safe and non-invasive. Your doctor will assess several aspects of your health, including your area of complaint, so that we can get a thorough understanding of how your body is performing. \Most dys-function begins as loss of coordination between systems. Using EEG, EMG, Thermal Scanning and Heart Rate Variability testing, we begin to piece together an understanding of how you are currently functioning.
Your brain-based assessment at Vita will begin with a thorough health history. Your chiropractor will then determine which evaluations you should undergo to measure your current level of function.
One of the first tools we have at our disposal is the Cryos Biovision Postural Mapping system. We chose this evaluation over x-ray as it allows for a dynamic evaluation of your posture. Biovision is also completely non-invasive so you avoid exposure to ionizing radiation. We can use this technology to measure your posture and determine minor changes to your overall structure. We also use this piece of equipment to evaluate the biomechanics of your feet. Both static and dynamic movements are evaluated to understand how the foundation of your body (your feet) are working together to support your frame. Once we have collected all the images, topographical maps of your body are created. Minute changes in position become quite apparent and can be tracked over the course of your care. X-rays may be taken as well should your chiropractor determine that they are necessary.
The second tool we use evaluates your nerve function in three different areas. This technology is also non-invasive. CLA’s comprehensive INSiGHT™ scanning technologies have been certified by the Space Foundation to provide a reliable, scientifically valid, quantitative and multidimensional representation of your neurological well-being. With this system, your chiropractor will perform three distinct tests:
Surface electromyography: This allows us to understand the base level of activity of all your spinal muscles and compare you to a spectrum of normal. The primary function of the stress response is to pump reserve energy to the muscular system allowing you to run or fight. We will see overactive and underactive (exhausted) muscles helping us to understand the function of your response to stress.
Surface thermography: The body has a set state of balance, or homeostasis. When this balance is thrown off, minute changes in temperature (adaptations to stress) can be seen at specific spinal levels. We use thermography to evaluate this autonomic nerve response along the skin. If the body is functioning normally, we should measure equal activity at each spinal level. Evaluating the differences on both sides of your spine can give us an understanding of the autonomic control of the glands and organs of the body. Each level of the spine has a different function, and it is common for a person with stomach or digestive issues to show stress or an adaptive response at the corresponding spinal levels.
Heart Rate Variability: This is arguably the most important scan you can ever do to understand the underlying level of function of your body. Our system will measure the amount of change and time between heart beats to understand how much capacity for adaptation your body currently has. Also this scan will let us understand whether you are predominantly in the Survival response or the healing state of the nerve system. This is your mind body connection test!
Once these tests are completed, your chiropractor will provide you with your CoreScore, which equates to a Report card for your nervous system. These tests are done every 12-24 visits which allow both you and your doctor to track your progress.
Balance and Stability: We use the balance plate by Bertec to measure balance and stability.
The Bertec balance plate is the most advanced in its field. With over 60,000 sensors, we will have a true understanding of your stability.
The BalanceCheck Screener™ determines if your balance problem is visual, vestibular or proprioceptive. The BalanceCheck™ software quickly assesses the patients’ abilities to maintain balance while standing and then tracks your progress throughout your care program. Training rehabilitation protocols lay a consistent path for balance improvement with customizable balance challenges that are progressive and specific to your weakness.
Your stability report compares you to your age and gives you a stability score. This information helps us understand how your proprioceptive, vestibular and visual balance systems are working. See more information on Balance and Stability.
After scanning your brain and gaining an understanding of your current level of neurological activity, your chiropractor will perform a comprehensive functional examination. This exam is directed towards the deficiencies identified in your scans and works on an afferent, efferent and hemispheric level. It is important to understand if the proper information is getting to the brain, what the brain is doing with that information and how the brain is then signaling back to the body.
Your chiropractor will take the information gathered from your scans and put it into action. You can expect testing to include some or all of the following: strength challenges (both neurological and functional), movement patterns, dynamic testing, orthopedic testing, cerebellar testing with a focus on right vs. left brain dominance and proprioceptive challenges. The doctors pull from a variety of techniques and systems integrating your brain control and signal messaging. It is our experience that no single technique system is capable of comprehensively evaluating brain function, hence the need for variety. You should be ready for a very different experience from any previous chiropractor you have seen. It is not uncommon for our new patients to leave saying: “I’ve never had an examination like that before!” We take great pride in researching, testing and utilizing the most state-of-the-art technology and examination guidelines to serve you best.
Please note: you will not be adjusted on your first visit. This gives the doctor a chance to look over your scans and determine the best course of treatment for your specific case. Some exceptions apply. This will be determined by your doctor.
We look forward to meeting with you and your family,
Your Vita Health Team
