Colic

If you could not talk and you had a tummy ache, a terrible headache Colic1and you can’t sleep, then you would probably cry, cry and cry even more.

The definition of colic is unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from 0 to 3 months old for more than 3 hours a day, more than 3 days a week continuing for 3 weeks or more. The episodes usually occur in the afternoon and evening hours.

As a parent you know if your child is suffering, so what could be the cause and what are your choices?

Upon examination, we often find spinal distortions in the baby’s upper cervical spine. These babies are probably suffering from head and neck pain. This is especially common if there was a prolonged birth, or one with some form of intervention.

How can a Chiropractor examine a baby? Our thermal scan is non-invasive and calibrated for infants. This exam will give us an indication of the spinal levels involved. After a complete hands-on exam by our pediatric-trained chiropractors, we will reveal if there is any spinal stress that is causing your child to suffer.

The results of a randomized controlled trial published in the October 1999 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics tracked a small group of 50 infants. Half received the drug dimethicone and the other half spinal manipulation. At the conclusionColic2 of the two-week study, the babies being adjusted by a chiropractor saw a 67% reduction in crying and the drug therapy group saw a 38% reduction.

Another study utilized chiropractic care on roughly 300 infants diagnosed, using strict criteria, with infant colic. Based on maternal diaries and interviews, 94% of the infants showed significant improvements in crying after an average of 2 weeks of treatment, which persisted until the end of the study (at least 3 months post-treatment).
